Torboy, Washington — Small Name From Big Mining Country

Torboy sits in Ferry County's mountain country, where nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century prospectors scattered claims, trails and place-names across the hills.

Mining had a way of producing geography faster than it produced permanent towns. A promising creek or claim could acquire a name, a camp and a burst of activity before anyone knew whether the ore would support a lasting settlement.

Torboy stayed small while Republic became the region's durable mining center. Timber and rural settlement later added other reasons to use the surrounding roads and valleys.

Its name now carries more mining-era ambition than its modern footprint. That is not unusual in Ferry County. The mountains are full of reminders that prospectors named possibilities; only some of them became towns.
