Dayton, Washington — Town That Kept the Old Buildings

Dayton has an 1881 railroad depot and an 1887 courthouse.

Both survived.

The town developed along the Touchet River as the commercial center of an agricultural valley, and nineteenth-century prosperity left behind substantial homes, stores and public buildings.

Rail service connected farmers with distant markets. The depot eventually lost its trains but became the oldest surviving passenger station in Washington.

The Columbia County Courthouse proved even more stubborn.

Opened while Washington was still a territory, it remains the state's oldest county courthouse still serving its original governmental purpose.

Preservation later became part of Dayton's identity, with historic districts protecting much of the downtown fabric.

Not every building survived because somebody in 1887 possessed extraordinary foresight.

Usefulness, economics, luck and later preservation all played a role.

Plenty of towns have history.

Dayton still has the buildings.
