Winton, Washington — Schoolhouse Left Before the Mill

Winton began in the 1890s as a Great Northern railroad camp near Stevens Pass.

A depot, worker housing and lumber operations turned it into a permanent community. By 1900 there were enough children for a school.

The timber-and-rail economy then contracted gradually rather than disappearing overnight.

Families left. Employment declined.

The school finally closed in 2000 after roughly a century of local education. Instead of being demolished, the schoolhouse was moved to Plain and preserved.

The lumber mill survived a few years longer, closing in 2006.

A small inhabited community remains.

Winton's decline happened in unusually tidy order: population thinned, the schoolhouse physically left town, and then the mill stopped.
