West Wenatchee, Washington — You Can Still See the City Eating the Orchards

West Wenatchee was not founded so much as accumulated.

For generations, irrigation, farm roads and fruit trees organized land west of the city. As Wenatchee grew, subdivisions pushed into those orchard parcels one property at a time.

The conversion never happened evenly. Rows of houses appeared beside rows of fruit trees. Irrigation infrastructure built for agriculture continued crossing residential ground. Old farm roads acquired suburban traffic.

Farther west, the foothills impose another limit as slope and wildfire become increasingly important.

Stand in the right place and the city's expansion is not abstract planning history. It is a backyard fence with an orchard on the other side.
