Dryden, Washington — Pine Flat Lost the Pines

Dryden used to be called Pine Flat.

Then much of the timber was cut.

Large trees in the Wenatchee Valley were logged and floated toward mills, leaving the old name increasingly inaccurate. When the Great Northern Railway arrived in 1892, the community became Dryden, honoring Canadian horticulturist and agriculture minister John Dryden.

The new name proved appropriate for what came next.

Native American homesteaders Dan and Topen Nason were among those who recognized the agricultural potential of the cleared ground. Irrigation and orchard development transformed the valley, and apples and pears replaced pine logs as the most visible crop.

Packing and transportation tied the small community to distant markets.

Pine Flat described the landscape people found. Dryden belongs to the landscape they made afterward.
