Chelan, Washington — Bottom of the Lake Is Below Sea Level

Lake Chelan is more than fifty miles long and extraordinarily deep.

At its deepest point, the lakebed lies hundreds of feet below sea level even though the lake itself sits in the mountains.

Glaciers did the excavation.

The resulting trough became a transportation corridor through terrain where roads remain difficult. Indigenous people used the lake and surrounding routes long before steamships carried miners, settlers, supplies and tourists.

Chelan developed at the lower end, where water exits toward the Columbia.

Engineers soon began manipulating that exit. Early dams failed; the modern hydroelectric project dates to the 1920s and raised the lake roughly twenty feet.

That made an already remarkable natural lake into a managed reservoir as well.

Around the lower basin, irrigation supports orchards and vineyards under a much drier climate than the alpine country visible farther uplake.

Chelan contains both landscapes in one view: hot cultivated hillsides below, glaciers and wilderness beyond, and an absurd amount of water between them.
