Kiona, Washington — Schoolhouse Once Crossed the River on Ice

Kiona's first school had four students.

A few years later, the building was moved across the Yakima River on ice.

That detail captures early settlement better than a list of founding dates. The Northern Pacific established a station at Kiona in the 1880s, giving western Benton County farmers a practical route for wheat, alfalfa, potatoes and fruit.

Irrigation canals arrived in the 1890s and expanded what the dry valley could grow.

Then another railroad reached the opposite bank in 1907 and helped create Benton City. The two communities became closely intertwined, eventually sharing schools and institutions under the Kiona-Benton City name.

A bridge made later river crossings less adventurous.

The schoolhouse had already demonstrated the basic idea: when the community changed sides of the river, move what mattered.
