Rogersburg, Washington — Where the Roads Run Out of Easy Choices

Rogersburg sits near the confluence of the Grande Ronde and Snake rivers in Washington's far southeastern corner.

Canyon walls crowd the water, leaving roads very few sensible options.

The community took its name from townsite owner G. A. Rogers. A store opened in 1912 and a post office served the area until 1939, useful institutions in ranch country where the next one could be a long trip away.

The confluence mattered long before either existed. Rivers organized Indigenous travel and later determined where settlers, ranches and roads could move through the canyons.

Modern transportation reduced Rogersburg's commercial role.

The geography did not become any easier. Two rivers still meet there, and the roads still have to negotiate the walls.
