Clarkston, Washington — First Came the Orchard, Then the City

Clarkston began as an irrigation-and-orchard project opposite Lewiston.

Developers called the settlement Vineland, a name that advertised the plan rather efficiently. Ditches and flumes moved water across the warm Snake River valley, and cherries and other fruit prospered.

The town tried Concord next, then settled on Clarkston in 1900 for William Clark—giving Lewiston and Clarkston one of America's more literal pairs of neighboring city names.

Incorporation required three attempts before voters approved it in 1902.

The orchard economy later faded in importance while timber, commerce and river transportation grew.

Dams downstream transformed the Snake into a navigable slackwater system, connecting the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley with Columbia River ports by barge.

The low elevation still gives Clarkston noticeably milder winters than the Palouse above, earning the valley its “banana belt” reputation.

The original Vineland idea was not foolish.

The city simply became much more than the orchards it was designed around.
