Sweetwater, Idaho — Prairie Farms Inside Nez Perce Reservation Geography

Sweetwater occupies rolling uplands south of the Clearwater River between Lewiston and the Camas Prairie.

Farms and ranches use the open country, with roads leading toward Lapwai, Lewiston and communities farther south.

The district lies within the Nez Perce Reservation, where treaty history, federal allotment and later land transfers produced a complicated pattern of tribal and non-tribal ownership.

That history remains part of the modern landscape rather than something confined to a museum.

Sweetwater never gathered into a dense town center. It remained a rural community spread across working ground.

The farms are obvious from the road. The layers of sovereignty and land history beneath them are less visible, but no less real.
