Spalding, Idaho — Mission Arrived Thousands of Years Late

Spalding is often introduced through Henry and Eliza Spalding's nineteenth-century mission.

That starts the story far too late.

The river bench where Lapwai Creek meets the Clearwater contains evidence of Nimiipuu occupation stretching back thousands of years. Salmon, travel routes and village networks made the location important long before missionaries arrived.

The Spaldings established their mission in the 1830s. The site later became the Northern Idaho Indian Agency, adding federal administration to a place already central to Nimiipuu life.

Today Spalding hosts the visitor center and headquarters of Nez Perce National Historical Park.

The mission matters because it changed the place.

The deeper history matters because the place did not begin with the mission.
