Peck, Idaho — When the Depot Moved, the Town Followed Uphill

Peck is a reminder that western towns were sometimes less permanent than the railroads serving them.

The first settlement developed closer to the Clearwater River. When a railroad depot was established on higher ground, commerce began drifting toward it. Businesses followed customers and freight uphill. Eventually the center of Peck followed too.

The move changed more than an address. Down near the Clearwater, steep canyon geography dominates. Higher ground opens toward farms and forested ridges, giving the relocated community a different physical relationship with the country around it.

Highways later reduced the railroad's importance, but nobody proposed moving Peck back down the hill.

A transportation decision became permanent geography. The depot moved once. The town took the hint.
