Lewiston, Idaho — Capital That Got Away

Lewiston was Idaho Territory's first capital.

It did not keep the job long.

Gold discoveries had made the city an important supply center when Idaho Territory was created in 1863, initially covering modern Idaho, Montana and much of Wyoming.

The political geography shifted almost immediately as new gold rushes pulled population south toward the Boise Basin. In 1864, the legislature moved the capital to Boise amid bitter legal and political disputes.

Lewiston lost the government and kept something more geographically dependable: two rivers.

The city sits where the Clearwater joins the Snake, at the bottom of a valley far below the surrounding plateaus. Steamboats, railroads and highways all exploited that corridor.

Later dams and navigation improvements turned the lower Snake into a barge route to the Columbia, allowing the Port of Lewiston to function as an inland seaport hundreds of river miles from the Pacific.

The city also carries older and more complicated history. Its early growth occurred amid the dispossession of Nimiipuu land, while Chinese miners, merchants and families became an important part of the gold-rush community.

Timber later added another major industry.

Lewiston lost the capital because politics moved south. The rivers stayed exactly where they were.
