Lenore, Idaho — Community Fitted Along the Clearwater

Lenore sits beside the Clearwater River east of Lewiston, where water, highway and canyon slopes compete for the same narrow corridor.

People have traveled this route for generations. Nez Perce communities used the Clearwater long before modern roads, and later transportation systems followed the same practical geography.

U.S. 12 now connects Lenore with Lewiston, Orofino and mountain country farther east.

Homes and small agricultural parcels occupy benches wherever the canyon allows enough room.

That gives Lenore its long, narrow shape. There was never much opportunity for a broad street grid because the river and hills had already claimed most of the real estate.
