Jacques, Idaho — Farm Country on the High Ground Above Lewiston

Jacques lies on the agricultural uplands above the Snake and Clearwater river valleys.

From the prairie, the country can look broad and straightforward. Then a canyon interrupts it.

That topography shaped settlement as much as farming did. Grain and other crops used the open ground, while steep breaks forced roads into longer routes toward Lewiston and the river corridors below.

Jacques never developed around an incorporated center. It remained a rural district of farms and households tied economically to Lewiston.

The locality is small; the landscape around it works at a much larger scale.

Out here, a neighbor may be close as the crow flies and considerably farther away once the road gets involved.
