Winchester, Idaho — Mill Pond Became a Lake

Winchester grew around timber on the forested edge of the Camas Prairie.

A large sawmill and logging operations supplied jobs during the early twentieth century, and the mill pond became part of the industrial landscape around town.

When timber employment contracted, the pond found a second life. Winchester Lake became the centerpiece of a state park, drawing anglers, campers and visitors to a community whose earlier economy had been built around lumber.

The shift is unusually visible because the same body of water served both eras.

What once helped support a mill now supports fishing docks, campsites and recreation. Winchester did not erase its industrial landscape; it repurposed it.
