Reubens, Idaho — Railroad Town on the Camas Prairie

Reubens sits high on the Camas Prairie, surrounded by grain country that once faced a serious transportation problem.

Wheat is valuable only if it can be moved.

Rail service connected prairie farms with Lewiston and markets beyond, and Reubens developed around the station, grain handling and businesses serving nearby households.

Highways and trucks eventually took over much of that work. Mechanized agriculture also reduced the number of people needed across the surrounding acreage.

Reubens remained incorporated while becoming much smaller than its transportation-era role might suggest.

The trains mattered because the prairie produced more than local people could consume. That basic agricultural equation never changed.
