Nezperce, Idaho — County Seat Carrying a Tribal Name

Nezperce is the Lewis County seat, but its one-word municipal name carries a history much larger than county government.

“Nezperce” compresses “Nez Perce,” the English name associated with the Nimiipuu people whose homeland extends far beyond the non-Native town. Treaties, federal policy and settlement dramatically reduced tribal land as farming expanded across the Camas Prairie.

The town later became a governmental and agricultural center, with a small population administering a broad rural county surrounded by grain country.

The courthouse explains Nezperce's modern civic role. The name points toward a political and human geography that county lines did not begin.
