Kamiah, Idaho — Heart of the Monster

Kamiah sits inside one of the most important landscapes in Nimiipuu tradition.

In the Heart of the Monster story, Coyote defeats a great monster that had swallowed the animals. He cuts apart its body to create peoples across the land; the heart remains in Nimiipuu country near Kamiah.

That story belongs to a place used for generations as a wintering and gathering area along the Clearwater.

Lewis and Clark later spent weeks nearby in 1806 after deep snow blocked their return across the Bitterroots. Sometimes exploration consists of waiting for the mountains to permit it.

Agriculture and timber shaped the modern town. During World War II, the valley even participated briefly in the federal push to grow industrial hemp for military fiber.

The oldest story remains the strongest.

Most towns have a founding story. Kamiah has a monster's heart.
