Troy, Idaho — Where Wheat Country Starts Growing Trees

Troy sits at the eastern edge of the Palouse, where open agricultural hills begin running into the wooded foothills of the Clearwater country.

That transition gave the town two economies within reach.

Grain came from deep loess soils to the west. Timber came from rising ground to the east. Rail connections carried both toward larger markets.

The settlement was first known as Huffs Gulch before adopting the more ambitious name Troy.

The old name may have been less elegant, but it understood the terrain.

Drive west today and the horizon opens into fields. Head east and forest begins enclosing the road.

Troy occupies the seam between them.
