Joel lies east of Moscow in the rolling Palouse, where wheat and legumes make acreage a more useful measure of community than blocks.

Rural households historically shared schools, postal routes and gathering places even when no dense commercial center formed. Those institutions gave farm districts names and social boundaries understood by the people living along the surrounding roads.
