Deary, Idaho — Railroad Was Built to Chase Trees

Deary makes more sense if the railroad is imagined as logging equipment rather than simply transportation between towns.

The Potlatch Lumber Company needed access to valuable white pine east of the Palouse. The Washington, Idaho and Montana Railway pushed into that timber country while temporary spurs reached active cutting areas.

The permanent town sat near the edge of a network whose outer branches were never expected to last.

Logging camps moved. Cutting advanced. Spurs disappeared after the timber they served was gone.

Potlatch executive William Deary supplied the town's name.

The community also sits on a sharp regional transition: Palouse farms open to the west while forest closes around the country to the east.

The logging railroad faded. The boundary between those two landscapes did not.
