Spirit Lake, Idaho — Timber Paid the Bills; the Lake Sold the View

Spirit Lake developed in the early twentieth century as both a timber town and a planned resort.

That combination was deliberate.

Developers including Frederick Blackwell invested in logging, mills, rail transportation and town building while promoting the lake as a destination.

The sawmill processed surrounding forests. Trains carried lumber out and visitors in. Hotels and homes appeared near the water.

Timber eventually contracted as an economic force. The resort idea proved more durable.

Cabins and year-round homes spread around the lake, and Kootenai County's population growth brought more residents into what had once been a relatively isolated community.

Legends have accumulated around the lake's name, including romanticized Indigenous stories whose documentation is much weaker than their repetition.

The water needs no mythology to explain the town.

Timber was inventory. The lake kept renewing the view.
