Post Falls, Idaho — Deal Is Still Carved Into the Rock

Post Falls began with water power and a land agreement beside the Spokane River.

In 1871, Frederick Post negotiated with Coeur d'Alene leader Andrew Seltice for land near the falls where Post intended to build a lumber mill. A record of that agreement was carved into granite at what is now known as Treaty Rock.

The mill gave the settlement its name and its first industry. After the mill burned in 1902, the river remained valuable for another reason: electricity. Washington Water Power developed hydroelectric generation at the site, and power from Post Falls helped serve mines far into the Silver Valley.

Interstate 90 later rewrote the city's geography again.

Post Falls now sits in the fast-growing corridor between Spokane Valley and Coeur d'Alene, where subdivisions and commerce have replaced much of the open ground that once separated the cities.

The falls are still there. So is the rock recording the agreement that put a mill beside them.
