North Pole, Idaho — Considerably South of the Actual One

North Pole is a rural locality in Kootenai County with a name doing far more climatic work than the landscape requires.

Forest, country roads and scattered homes surround it. The documentary record does not support a tidy Santa Claus origin story, so inventing one would only make the place less interesting.

The oddity can stand on its own.

North Pole never developed into an incorporated town, and modern roads make larger communities practical for shopping and services.

It remains a small inhabited piece of northern Idaho with one excellent conversation starter.

People live there. Reindeer remain optional.
