Medimont, Idaho — Where the Prairie Starts Turning Into Lake Country

Medimont lies along State Highway 3 in southeastern Kootenai County, on the route between the Coeur d'Alene Reservation prairie and the forest-and-water country toward Harrison and the St. Joe.

The landscape changes along the drive. Open agricultural ground gives way increasingly to timbered hills, river corridors and the complicated shoreline geography of southern Lake Coeur d'Alene.

Medimont grew as a small roadside community inside that transition. Homes, small businesses and rural properties follow the highway rather than gathering around a traditional town square.

The transition is subtle enough that drivers can pass through without quite noticing where Medimont begins or ends.

Medimont is less a dot than a stretch of road where one northern Idaho landscape starts becoming another.
