Coeur d'Alene, Idaho — French Name, a Tribal Homeland and a Floating Golf Green

Coeur d'Alene's name is French. The people it refers to are not.

French-speaking fur traders used the term Coeur d'Alene—roughly “heart of an awl”—for the Schitsu'umsh people, whose homeland extended across a vast lake-and-river region in what is now Idaho, Washington and Montana.

The modern city began beside a U.S. Army post established near the lake in 1878. Fort Coeur d'Alene later became Fort Sherman, and parts of the old post survive on the North Idaho College campus.

After the Army left, timber, steamboats, railroads and tourism kept the city growing.

Lake Coeur d'Alene remained the organizing feature.

It also carries a complicated industrial legacy: metals from more than a century of mining and smelting upstream accumulated in parts of the lake and river system. The Coeur d'Alene Tribe remains deeply involved in environmental, fisheries and cultural work across its homeland.

Modern Coeur d'Alene added one gloriously unnecessary response to the lake.

The resort's 14th golf hole sits on a movable floating green. Golfers who hit it take a boat to finish the hole.

The fort disappeared, the mills changed and the city grew into northern Idaho's urban center.

The lake kept finding new jobs.
