Cataldo, Idaho — Mission and the Community Are Not in the Same Place

Cataldo carries the name of one of Idaho's most important historic sites, but the modern community and the Old Mission are not actually the same place.

The Mission of the Sacred Heart stands several miles away at what is now Coeur d'Alene's Old Mission State Park.

Coeur d'Alene people and Jesuit missionaries constructed the church in the nineteenth century. It is widely recognized as Idaho's oldest standing building.

Modern Cataldo developed later along the Coeur d'Alene River corridor through transportation, mining and settlement tied to the Silver Valley.

That distinction matters because the mission's history belongs fundamentally to the Coeur d'Alene people as well as the missionaries associated with it.

Cataldo today is small. Its name carries a historical footprint considerably larger than its street map.
