Athol, Idaho — Airplane Collection That Became a Theme Park

Athol spent most of its history as a small northern Idaho town tied to timber, farms and transportation.

Then Gary Norton started collecting airplanes.

His vintage-aircraft interest grew into an airfield and attraction. Silverwood opened nearby in 1988 and quickly expanded beyond aviation into rides, roller coasters and a water park.

What followed is wonderfully disproportionate.

A community historically surrounded by forest and farms now hosts the Pacific Northwest's largest theme park, drawing seasonal crowds vastly larger than Athol's permanent population.

At the same time, Kootenai County's population growth has pushed subdivisions and businesses northward.

Athol now sits where two kinds of growth meet: people moving to northern Idaho and people arriving for roller coasters.

Neither was in the original railroad-town plan.
