White Bird, Idaho — War Began in This Canyon

The first major battle of the Nez Perce War took place near White Bird in June 1877.

Federal efforts to force non-treaty Nimiipuu bands onto the reduced reservation had pushed tensions to a breaking point. After violence between settlers and Nimiipuu men, U.S. cavalry entered White Bird Canyon.

Nimiipuu warriors met them there.

The Army line collapsed. Thirty-four soldiers were killed; the Nimiipuu suffered no combat deaths in the battle.

The victory did not end the conflict. It began a retreat that carried Nimiipuu families more than a thousand miles while U.S. forces pursued them toward Canada.

The modern community developed later along the Salmon River corridor.

U.S. 95 once descended the famous White Bird Grade through a remarkable series of switchbacks before a newer alignment replaced much of it.

The battlefield and old highway share the same lesson: in White Bird Canyon, terrain has always had a vote.
