Warren, Idaho — Gold Camp That Never Quite Became Past Tense

Warren grew from gold discoveries in the 1860s in remote mountain country west of the Salmon River.

Prospectors built a substantial camp with stores, saloons, cabins and mining equipment supporting placer and hard-rock operations.

The rush eventually faded, but Warren did not become an empty historical exhibit. Mining continued intermittently, a small residential community remained, and hunting, recreation and backcountry travel added new reasons to keep roads and buildings in use.

Isolation helped preserve pieces of the old mining landscape that development might have erased elsewhere.

That continuity is what makes Warren unusual. People still live among structures and claims connected to more than a century and a half of mineral exploration.

The gold rush ended. The camp never entirely got the message.
