Riggins, Idaho — River Is the Main Street

Riggins is squeezed into the Salmon River canyon, where flat ground is scarce enough that the river feels less like scenery than civic infrastructure.

U.S. 95 follows the same corridor because there are few alternatives. The highway descends from the Camas Prairie, reaches Riggins and continues through country where road and river negotiate for space.

The elevation change produces a striking climate difference. Snow can cover the uplands while the canyon remains comparatively mild, historically allowing fruit and gardens in places that seem unlikely from above.

Mining, ranching and timber brought people into the canyon. Whitewater later became an industry.

The Salmon's “River of No Return” reputation came from the difficulty early travelers had getting back upstream after descending it. Modern rafting and jet-boat businesses turned that problem into the attraction.

Riggins never had much room to spread sideways.

It learned to build an economy around the thing taking up most of the valley.
