Pollock, Idaho — Few Homes Between the Salmon and the Canyon Wall

Pollock lies along U.S. 95 north of Riggins in the Salmon River canyon.

There is almost no neutral ground here. The river occupies the bottom, the highway follows it, houses and ranch properties use whatever benches they can find, and steep slopes begin almost immediately.

Mining, ranching and transportation all depended on this corridor before recreation added anglers, boaters and travelers to the traffic.

Unlike many major rivers farther north, the Salmon remains free-flowing through this stretch. That keeps the canyon dynamic rather than turning it into reservoir shoreline.

Pollock is small because the geography gives it very little room to be anything else. The surprising part is not that the community is tiny; it is that people found enough flat ground to build one at all.
