Orogrande, Idaho — “Big Gold” Was an Optimistic Name

Orogrande lies deep in the Clearwater Mountains east of Elk City.

Its name translates roughly as “big gold,” which tells you almost everything about the expectations that brought people there.

Prospectors worked placer and hard-rock deposits throughout the district, establishing camps and claims in terrain expensive and difficult to reach. Mining rose and fell with ore values, access and investment.

The settlement never became as large as its name implied. A small population remained among cabins, claims and forest roads connected with the broader Elk City mining country.

Today recreation and public lands matter alongside the mining legacy.
