Lowell, Idaho — Three Rivers and Almost No Flat Ground

Lowell sits where the Lochsa and Selway rivers meet to form the Middle Fork Clearwater.

That confluence defines the community more strongly than any street grid could.

Steep forest rises almost immediately from the water, while U.S. 12 follows the river because the terrain offers few alternatives.

Nimiipuu people traveled and lived throughout this watershed long before highways entered it.

Later logging, road construction and forest work supported residents.

Today anglers, rafters, hunters and travelers use Lowell as an entry point to enormous stretches of public and wilderness land.

The town is small for a straightforward reason.

The rivers and mountains already occupy nearly everything.
