Kooskia, Idaho — Highway Has a Wartime History

Kooskia—pronounced KOO-skee—sits where the Middle and South forks of the Clearwater meet.

Nimiipuu people used this river system for generations before railroads, timber operations and highways followed the same natural corridors.

The modern town grew through transportation and forest industries.

During World War II, the nearby Kooskia Internment Camp added a darker chapter.

Japanese men classified as enemy aliens were held there from 1943 to 1945.

Internees volunteered for road-construction work on the route that became part of U.S. 12 through rugged Clearwater country.

Many were long-term U.S. residents whom discriminatory law had barred from naturalization.

Archaeological work later recovered personal objects and traces of daily life from the camp.

Drivers now leave Kooskia and follow the Clearwater east on a major mountain highway.
