Grangeville, Idaho — Prairie Ends Here

Grangeville sits near the edge of the Camas Prairie, where broad agricultural ground begins giving way to forested mountains and deeply cut river country.

That transition explains the town.

Nimiipuu people used the prairie and its camas grounds long before non-Native settlement. Gold seekers later crossed it on routes toward Florence and Elk City, and agriculture turned the open ground into grain and livestock country.

Grangeville became the Idaho County seat in 1902.

That is a larger job than it sounds: Idaho County covers more than 8,500 square miles and contains enormous stretches of national forest and wilderness.

Transportation has always had to negotiate that scale. The Camas Prairie Railroad reached Grangeville in 1908 only after engineers forced a route through difficult canyon terrain, including tunnels and elaborate grades.

The town became a jumping-off point for farms on one side and remote mountain country on the other.

The prairie gives Grangeville room. Just beyond town, Idaho starts taking that room back.
