Westmond, Idaho — Rural Ground in Sandpoint's Expanding Orbit

Westmond lies along U.S. 95 south of Sandpoint, in country where northern Idaho's population growth is changing the landscape one parcel at a time.

Timber, farms and scattered homes once defined the corridor more clearly. Better highway access made Sandpoint and Coeur d'Alene easier to reach, and residential development followed into wooded and open land outside incorporated cities.

There was no single moment when Westmond became exurban.

A farm sells. A driveway appears. A few more houses arrive. Traffic grows heavier.

The older rural landscape remains visible between those changes, which is what makes Westmond interesting now: it is a community in the middle of becoming something denser without having decided exactly what that something is.
