Sandpoint, Idaho — Town That Keeps Having to Cross the Lake

Sandpoint occupies an awkwardly beautiful piece of geography between Lake Pend Oreille and the mountains.

The lake is enormous and more than 1,100 feet deep in places. The Clark Fork enters from the east; the Pend Oreille River leaves toward Washington.

Indigenous people used this lake-and-river system long before nineteenth-century miners, steamers and railroad surveyors arrived.

Railroads made Sandpoint permanent. The Northern Pacific and later Great Northern turned the settlement beside Sand Creek into a transportation junction—and immediately confronted the problem posed by all that water.

Eventually the highway had the same problem.

The first Long Bridge toward Sagle opened in 1910, running nearly two miles across the lake. It was described as the world's longest wooden wagon bridge. Successive replacements kept making the same basic argument: Sandpoint works much better if people can reach the other shore.

Timber became a major industry, with large mills processing northern Idaho forests. Later, recreation and tourism grew around the lake and Schweitzer.

Lake Pend Oreille also acquired a stranger job. The U.S. Navy uses its depth and acoustic conditions for research related to submarine and ship technology.

That oddity actually fits Sandpoint's history.

Railroads, bridges, steamers, recreation and naval research have all been responses to the same thing: an extraordinary body of water sitting directly in the way.
