Outlet Bay, Idaho — Neighborhood Drawn by the Shoreline

Outlet Bay curves around the southern end of Priest Lake near the point where lake water begins its journey downstream.

A conventional town plan would be redundant because the lake already supplied one. Cabins, year-round homes and recreation properties follow the shoreline and the roads that can be fitted through the surrounding forest.

Coolin became the stronger commercial center nearby, while Outlet Bay developed around access to water—boats, fishing, summer cabins and eventually permanent residences.

That makes the community feel more like a neighborhood wrapped around a geographic feature than a town imposed on the landscape.

At Priest Lake, that arrangement is perfectly sensible. The most valuable address is often defined less by how close it is to Main Street than by how quickly you can get a boat into the water.
