East Hope, Idaho — City Between Mountain and Deep Water

East Hope stretches along the north shore of Lake Pend Oreille beside the neighboring city of Hope, occupying a narrow band of land between steep mountains and one of North America's deepest lakes.

That geography naturally favors shoreline homes and hillside roads rather than a broad town center. Railroads, timber and lake transportation shaped the larger Hope area historically; modern East Hope is primarily residential and recreational.

Residents rely on nearby communities, including Hope and Sandpoint, for many services while maintaining a separate incorporated city.

East Hope's small footprint is less a curiosity than a response to the landscape. There simply is not much flat ground between mountain and water—and the city has made a home in what there is.
